Moving in the Rain: How to Keep Your Move Dry, Safe, and Stress-Free

Oct 10, 2024 | Uncategorized

It’s the day of the big move. You’ve diligently packed everything, booked a truck, and double-checked everything on your list. You’re as ready as possible, but the weather has other ideas.

Moving day is stressful enough without the added challenge of rain and storms, but moving in the rain doesn’t have to be a disaster. With a little extra planning and a few tricks, you can keep your belongings (and yourself) dry, safe, and still on schedule.

Preparing for a Rainy Moving Day the Right Way

Since you book your moving date well ahead of an accurate weather forecast, you should prepare for the possibility of rain.

Ideally, you’re working with a moving service or at least a truck with an enclosed cargo bed. If your belongings are exposed, you need to protect your boxes and appliances like they’re about to take a trip through a car wash.

Stock up on heavy-duty plastic bins or waterproof moving bags, as cardboard and rain don’t mix well. Wrap everything in plastic or trash bags, and while you’re at it, pack anything that absolutely can’t be exposed to water, like electronics and documents, inside a car or the moving truck cab.

Next, let’s talk about clothing. While your new running shoes might look fantastic on the track, you should be wearing non-slip boots and a durable raincoat. Gloves are also a must to keep a firm grip when handling wet furniture.

Lastly, if possible, schedule the move strategically. If the forecast predicts only light rain or even sunshine in the afternoon, aim to do most of the move within this timeframe. If that’s not an option, don’t stress—there’s still more you can do to make sure moving in the rain doesn’t drench your plans.

Protecting your Belongings While Moving in the Rain

Once the rain starts falling, the priority is protecting your stuff. The first rule of thumb is to keep the wet outside where it belongs. To do this, have someone stationed at entrances with a towel to wipe down items and boxes as they go in and out.

Use moving blankets, tarps, or even old towels to wrap your furniture (especially anything made of plywood) to prevent water damage. Don’t forget to cover the floor of the moving truck with blankets or sheets to avoid pooled water from damaging anything that’s touching the floor.

If you’re tackling moving in the rain by yourself, prepare to get creative. Umbrellas, shower curtains, and even kiddie pools can all be used to shield your belongings when in transit. But if this all sounds like a lot of effort (because it is), why not let the pros handle it?

A professional moving company like Mike Hammer Moving knows how to move your valuable property safely, even when the weather is trying its hardest to ruin your day and your furniture. They have the right equipment, experience, and plenty of waterproofing to ensure your things stay safe and dry.

Safety First: Dealing with Slippery Conditions

Relocating everything is hard enough, but rain brings a whole new level of “adventure” to moving. While you’re looking out for your things, you also need to keep your own safety in mind when moving in the rain.

Wet driveways and floors are a recipe for slips and falls, so be sure to have towels at the ready to keep those surfaces as dry as possible before trying to navigate them with a 130-pound couch on your back. Wear non-slip shoes and consider laying down any spare cardboard boxes to keep things from getting too slippery.
