What You Need to Know Before Moving a TV

Jul 24, 2024 | Moving

One of the most delicate items to transport during a move is your flat-screen television. As the source of your relaxation and movie nights, there are some things to know about carefully moving a TV.

With the average American watching around three hours of television daily, this is not just an item but a significant part of your life that you want to protect as you move to your new home. Let’s also not forget that you’ve probably spent a couple thousand dollars on it. So, taking extra precautions before moving a TV is crucial for your wallet.

Before moving a TV, here is exactly what you need to know.

How to Pack a TV to Move

The average 55-inch flat-screen television weighs a little over 30 pounds. Its internal structure is almost as delicate as the glass screen display.  Making sure you pack your television properly will save you the anxiety of wondering if it will make it through the move in one piece.

Step 1: Unplug and Remove Cords

It may be tempting to leave the cords plugged into the television to make installing it in your new home easy. However, this can cause damage to both the cords and the TV itself. Instead, unplug and remove all cords from the television. Before doing so, make sure to label each cord and take a photo so you can remember where each one was plugged in.

Wrap up the cords and place them in a separate box or bag for ultimate moving organization

Step 2: Disconnect from the Base or Mount

When moving a TV, you will have to disconnect the base or mount to make sure it fits in the box.  Any loose screws should be kept in a separate bag. It’s a good idea to tape the bag of screws to the base or mount to make sure they stay together.

Step 3: Pack It Up

Many moving companies or shipping stores sell flat-screen TV moving kits. These are large boxes that can measure around 70 inches and come with foam padding and plastic wrap to protect the glass in the box.

When packing the television, slide it into the box gently. Avoid dropping it to the bottom of the box, as this could cause both external and internal damage. If there is extra space in the box that could cause the television to slide, place some padding, such as dishtowels, pillowcases, or clothing, to ensure the television stays in one place.

In the case that you cannot find a flat-screen TV moving kit, wrap the television protectively in thick moving blankets.

What is the Best Position for Moving a TV?

When packing up your moving truck, you may feel that laying the television flat is the best use of space. When moving a TV, the best position is to keep it upright. Never lay it down flat, as this could cause damage. Televisions are designed so that the screen is balanced on the sides and corners when standing upright. If laid down, there could be unequal distribution, causing weak spots in the middle of the screen and potential cracks.
